I had already gone through my To Do list on Day 6. Knocked almost all those items out of the way. Only thing left was to add tunneling through walls. Then I eliminated a lot of walls and decided to not allow the play to tunnel.

With that, I decided that 6 days was enough. I am declaring this project done. The game is playable. You can win. You can permanently die. Health and gold are tracked. I learned a lot of python. That was the real goal - getting better at python programming.

I did try to create a class and use a player object to hold all the attributes that were previously global independent variables. However this was just some cleaning up of the code. There were no functional changes done on day 7. I think I might further refactor my code. That way I can learn more python and improve the code.

Legend of Angbandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18049943271218398553noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12003737521893278.post-68431535184098717662021-03-11T20:34:00.000-05:002021-03-11T20:34:03.648-05:007DRL Day 6 - Game Completion

I attended to some mechanics of the overall game today. First I implemented keypad movement. This let the user move diagonally. I also halted the game when the player died. Also added detection to see whether all monster have been killed. If so, I also halt the game.

On a programming front, I removed any function parameters that were not necessary. Almost all variables seem to have a global scope. No need to pass them to my functions. Makes for simpler looking code. I might be violating some proper design principles. However I blame that on the Python programming language.

I decided to severely reduce the amount of dungeon walls. This was an attempt to ensure the player can reach all monsters to battle and win the game. I also took care of initial wall and gold placement to make sure the player does not start out on top of either of them. I think I have a fully playable game. It is highly minimal, but playable.

Legend of Angbandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18049943271218398553noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12003737521893278.post-58671035398236912952021-03-10T18:59:00.000-05:002021-03-10T18:59:01.569-05:007DRL Day 5 - Monster Artificial Intelligence

I was getting annoyed with monsters getting stuck in my maze. So I added some more logic to their movement. Found it tough to figure out how to keep them going towards the player, even if there were walls in the way. I think there are still several scenarios where they get stuck.

Was not satisfied with the turquoise wall color. So I changed it to green. Also made the gold pieces an orange instead of yellow color. This causes a retro 1960s look to the game. Feels right since Rogue is an ancient computer game.

I finally broke down and added a scrolling message section at the bottom of the maze. This worked out well. I primed the queue with some initial welcome messages at the start of the game. Now at least the player has a running commentary on what is going on in battle.

Not sure where I am going to go next. I might clean up the code, especially in the department of function calls. I do need to implement perma-death. Right now if you die, your hit points go to zero. But you are allowed to keep playing. That is not right.

Legend of Angbandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18049943271218398553noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12003737521893278.post-8435643504393483492021-03-09T20:57:00.002-05:002021-03-10T18:54:36.752-05:007DRL Day 4 - Mechanics

I did not make many visual changes to the game today. Moved the gold and hit points stats to the right of the maze. This is to make room for a scrolling message area below the maze. My goal this time around was to concentrate on making the game challenging through a sense of balance.

I decided to bump up the number of monsters in the maze. I made sure when choosing an initial position, that I did not choose a space on a wall. I also ensured I did not put a monster on top of another monster. Had to update the monster movement routine to also make sure the monsters did not step on top of each other.

I implemented regeneration of player hit points per turn. Tomorrow I shall try to add more smarts to the monster movement. They get stuck way too often in the maze. Monsters don't need supreme intelligence. But they need to know how to get out of a bind and attack the player.

Legend of Angbandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18049943271218398553noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12003737521893278.post-57932400872501488362021-03-08T20:18:00.000-05:002021-03-08T20:18:00.932-05:007DRL Day 3 - Monsters

Today I implemented monsters in my dungeon. They are all nameless. Their symbology is a red "p". I gave them each hit points. For battle purposes, I also gave the player hit points as well. The player's hit points are now displayed on the bottom of the screen next to the gold amount.

The monster do try to move towards the player. Based on the nature of the dungeon walls, the monsters do not move smartly. Therefore they can get lodged in assorted walls. I need the monsters to get a little smarter. They should detect that they are stuck, and choose another path to get to the player.

Battle is currently working. Monsters and the player do a set number of hit points damage per attack. Both always score a hit. There is detection for when a monster dies. Upon death they disappear from the screen. I have not implemented death for the player character yet. I probably will tomorrow.

I did fix some prior bugs in the game. Now gold will not be placed on top of a wall. Also the player can collect gold and move onto the space previously occupied by the hold in a single turn. I also made sure that monsters cannot be initially placed on top of a wall. The game is progressing slowly. But I am pleased with the overall progress.

Legend of Angbandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18049943271218398553noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12003737521893278.post-58464664157978797022021-03-07T16:26:00.002-05:002021-03-08T20:18:19.455-05:007DRL Day 2 - Dungeon Walls

This is the end of day 2 for my Seven Day Roguelike (7DRL) entry. I did some color changes on the game screen. Background is now black. Maze walls are turquoise. The player is white.

I have added random interior maze generation. Also sprinkled in some gold in the maze. The player can hold down an arrow key, and the player can automatically move in that direction. I implemented checks so that you cannot walk through walls. There is a gold counter. When you move over top of a gold stack, you get +10 gold.

Next I will need to add some enemy monsters. They will need to follow the player to do battle. I will then need to implement battles. This will require the player having hit points which decrease when they are hit. The monsters will need their own hit points to see if they die due to battle. That might be enough for tomorrow.

Legend of Angbandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18049943271218398553noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12003737521893278.post-75714904799777377722021-03-06T13:17:00.000-05:002021-03-07T16:21:11.904-05:007DRL 2021 Begins

The annual Seven Day Rougelike (7DRL) tournament has begun. I have been out of the game for a few years. However I recently decided to learn python programming. What better way to get some hands on practice than to code up a roguelike game?

I confess I did not know how to do graphics in python. No problem though. There is a pygame module with a simple API that I can make use of. So now I have a 2D maze in a python structure (a list of lists). And I can draw that maze onto the screen. The maze is not impressive. It is just an outline of a rectangular big room. Baby steps.

I also have drawn the player character in the center of the screen. Pygame let's you accept and process keyboard inputs. So I have coded handling of the arrow keys. The player can now move around the screen. The player can also walk through walls currently. So that might be the next thing I code in there. Might also revisit the screen colors. That should be easy.

Legend of Angbandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18049943271218398553noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12003737521893278.post-77274336255977020252021-01-09T22:05:00.002-05:002021-01-09T22:05:40.765-05:00Tips for Releasing a Game for Sale on Steam

I read this article today on how to market a game this year. At first I thought it was about making the game. But no. We are talking about selling it on Steam. A lot of the advice was new to me and counterintuitive.

For starters, you should price your game higher. One would think that would scare away buyers. But you do this to plan for large percentage sales in the future that might lure a lot of buyers. You also should not release your game on itch.io. Also seems counterintuitive. But hey. Got to listen to the pros.

You are gong to have to spend some money. Professional art for the cover and for in-game graphics are a must. Man. I guess novice pixelart does not go far in the professional game market. All right. Step 1: build game. Step 2: market game.

Legend of Angbandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18049943271218398553noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12003737521893278.post-32713949589584118972021-01-04T16:27:00.002-05:002021-01-04T16:27:39.985-05:00Learn From Harvard

I have heard about universities offering free online classes. It seems Harvard is doing this as well. You can audit some of their classes for no cost. The most interesting one I have found is "Introduction to Game Development". It allegedly gets you coding in C# and Lua. You will use frameworks such as Unity and LOVE 2D.

I have not taken the course yet. But I bet it is probably pretty good if it is a Harvard course. Too bad I can't actually enroll in the class and say I went to Harvard. They do offer some sort of certification if you cough up $199 for it. I wonder if there is any way I could talk my employer into footing that bill. Probably not.

Legend of Angbandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18049943271218398553noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12003737521893278.post-18410266697736550602019-01-23T22:11:00.001-05:002019-01-23T22:11:54.955-05:00Word of Recall

I am down deep in the dungeon. Have fought some good battles. My inventory is chock full. Time to use my Word of Recall scroll to teleport up to town. Doh! I don't have any such scrolls. Weird. I usually carry at least 5 or 6 of them around minimum. What am I to do?

My initial reaction is to walk straight up to town through the stair cases. But that is going to take too long. I also have no food. Silly me. Okay. Maybe I can search around and find some items that will help me. I don't want to expend all my energy, get hungry, and die.

So I avoid battles with monsters. I also ignore most treasures that I might normally pick up. I start discarding some of the valuable items I am carrying. I find a rod of detecting doors/stairs. But it does not recharge quick enough to find all the stairs I need.

Eventually I find some food. And then some more. The immediate danger is over. I find a lot of scrolls that I have not identified. I wonder if one of them is a Word of Recall. I don't have identify spells to spare. At long last I find a rod, and once identified, determine that is a Rod of Recall. I am saved!
Saw a post today from an aspiring gave developer looking to work for a AAA gaming company. He is an older gent. Works in the IT industry. Been trying to get a game dev job for six years. No luck yet.

The exceptional thing about this guy is that he created his own company and developed a game. Tried to do that to beef up his resume. The game is a 3D world made with the help of Unity. It is called Ethereal Legends. Check out a review of the game on YouTube.

You know it is a tough transfer from IT to gaming if this guy cannot make the jump. He has already shipped a title on Steam. I guess you got to go straight into game dev right from college. Hope you got good grades, some internships, and a bunch of side projects to impress the gaming companies.Legend of Angbandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18049943271218398553noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12003737521893278.post-17599299455625827272018-07-17T22:53:00.000-04:002018-07-17T22:53:37.049-04:00Checkers Jump and Capture

I am back to working on my checkers program. Added the capability for the player to jump over and capture the computer pieces. The computer cannot jump over the player pieces yet. And there is no double jump. But all of those are coming soon.

Eventually I will need the ability to promote pieces to kings for both sides. However right now I am focusing on baby steps. It is working out pretty good. Just doing some game logic. Not learning a whole lot of C++. But hey. Any programming is good practice.
Originally I started writing a chess app to practice some C++ programming. The movement of the pieces were tricky. So I decided to work on the simpler checkers game. Having drawn the board, I am now drawing game pieces on the board.

I can respond to the player choosing a piece. The selected piece gets highlighted on the screen. Also can have the player click on the location where the piece should be moved to. Implementing simple checkers movement rules (no jumping opponent pieces yet).

Now that the player can move, time for the computer to do the same. Originally I thought I would generate a list of all possible moves and rank them. But for now I just have the computer choose the first available move.

These limitations lead to a pretty boring checkers game. I guess it is time to implement jumping/capturing opponent pieces. After that, I must implement piece promotion to kings. One thing at a time though.
I decided that I wanted to try my hand at writing a chess game. Started thinking about the objects. The pieces were a bit complicated. So I simplified my aim and decided to go for checkers instead. I wrote some classes. Got some logic in there. Represented a game board with pieces on them.

At first I just used text to output the game board. It looked terrible. Plus it was clunky to specify the move you wanted to make. I did this to spend as little time on the user interface, leaving more time for the actual checkers engine. Never got to it.

Later I took a Udemy class that helped a lot. It was Learn to program Tic Tac Toe Game in Visual C++ on Windows. Whew. Lengthy course name. This was an awesome course. It got into the details of drawing the game board and playing the game. Just what I needed. Best of all, the course is free. Props to course instructor Mohammad!

With this knowledge, I launched my Visual Studio. Decided on a Win32 project. Much of the boilerplate was provided by the template for this project. I first customized the About box because it was easy. Then I filled in the WM_PAINT handler. It was actually quite easy. Now I have a game board drawn.

Next step: draw some checkers pieces.Legend of Angbandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18049943271218398553noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12003737521893278.post-50804213459956309592017-12-05T15:42:00.000-05:002017-12-05T15:42:01.142-05:00Have You Played Atari Today?

While eating lunch today, I came across an advertisement from Kohl's. They are selling an Atari Flashback Portable device for $39.99. It has a very small screen (less than 3 inches). It mostly plays Atari 2600 games. However there are some updated games included as well. This sounded very interesting.

Looking at the official documentation for this device, I see the following gems included:

Centipede

Dig Dug

Galaxian

Tempest

Some titles that I would have like to have seen were Kaboom and Pacman. Although the handheld has a tiny screen, you can hook up the output to a TV if you get some cables to do so. You can also plug in an SD card and play more games.

There are buttons on the pad for control. Might be a bit harder than the real joysticks/paddles from the 2600 console. Still this is a trip down memory lane. I never owned an Atari 2600. But the neighbors did. I know I really wanted to have one. Instead my parents bought me a computer. But that is another story.Legend of Angbandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18049943271218398553noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12003737521893278.post-44654178058405571632017-03-30T21:08:00.001-04:002017-03-30T21:08:47.221-04:00Short Lived Victory

I have been playing the Warrior class in Angband. It is tough not having all the useful spells I had as a mage. But at least I strive to have good strength and dexterity. Makes hand to hand combat so much more effective. Some monsters are just resistant to magic. As a warrior, I can deliver a combat beat down.

Was scumming up and down the stairs to quickly find loot and battles. One such fight produced special boots. Boots of Feanor? These were better than vanilla boots of speed. These were +15 to speed. Unfortunately the victory was short lived. A bunch of hounds ganged up on me. I was super stunned. Essentially I got paralyzed. Game over man.Legend of Angbandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18049943271218398553noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12003737521893278.post-77741684079472578132016-12-01T22:48:00.002-05:002016-12-01T22:48:52.153-05:00Adventure Creation with Twine

Live has been very hectic this year. Did not get to participate in the 7DRL rogue-like game building contest. Damn. I have been doing them for 5 or more years religiously. Oh well. Better luck next year.

I do read a lot even though I am busy. Just saw a post on how to make an adventure using Twine. "No programming necessary." I downloaded the program. It was 43M in size. The user interface is quite minimal. I tried following the instructions on the post. Was able to create locations. But I could not for the life of me figure out how to link my spots together.

Then it dawned on me. You need to create links by surrounding text with your location names in double braces. So if you wanted to link to a spot called Start, you type this in the description of a location: [[Start]].

All that seems simple now that I know how to do it. But the tutorial I was reading only showed a picture of the link. It did not explain that in English. All right. Now I can make a choose your own adventure game without programming.

The good news is that Twine outputs HTML. Now if I could only figure out how to upload the HTML to my new web hosting provider, I will be good to go!Legend of Angbandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18049943271218398553noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12003737521893278.post-60174343507391794802016-11-15T21:47:00.001-05:002016-11-15T21:47:02.836-05:00RikuKat

As usual, I found myself reading about game development on Reddit. Some guy wanted advice on how to survive while developing games full time. One girl chimed in with some decent advice. Someone else replied that it is easier if you are a good looking girl. But who was this girl?

I checked out her Twitter. She has a lot of posts. Good pictures too. Apparently she is Renee Gittins. She is CEO of her own game company. It is a small outfit. Looks like the first game is "Potions: A Curious Tale".

You should check out her Twitter. Good stuff. Not really related to Angband. But in the game development arena for sure.
I recently died playing Angband. Had been playing the character for a long time. Got complacent. That resulted in a death. So it was time to roll the dice again. This time around, I chose a human warrior. Got lucky with a unique weapon early on in the game.

This new character found some boots of speed too. I made sure I had something to prevent blindness. And I wore two items of resistance. Then I headed down deep. I cleared out a level. Had a lot of stuff I needed to sell up in town. Tried to read my scroll of recall. Ooops. I have no scrolls.

I knew I was running low on the scrolls. Happened twice in a row that I could not buy any in town. I guess the little I had must have burned up when I was not paying too close of attention. Now I needed to walk all the way up into town.

Conserved my food. Scummed the stairs. If I saw a way up, I would climb up. Otherwise just went up and down the stairs to see what random things would get generated. Any items that would help me detect the stairs were picked up. Two thirds of the way up, I found a scroll of word of recall. I decided not to use it. I came this far. Might as well walk all the way up.Legend of Angbandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18049943271218398553noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12003737521893278.post-16608376461826217152015-05-26T10:53:00.000-04:002015-05-26T10:53:00.751-04:00World of Warcraft

I recently started watching the Sword Art Online anime. It is about player who enter an MMO and get stuck in there online. It is really good. I am still on season one. This got me thinking that I want to get into an MMO. At least I should try one out. Why not World of Warcraft?

Yes I am a bit late to the game. Ten to twelve years late for WoW. But better late than never. Okay. I found I needed to create a Battle net account. Done. I figure I would try the free version of WoW to start. Aha. They have a downloadable version. But it is 30Gb large? Wut?

I let the download go over night. Somehow it stalled. So now I am still trying to download this massive thing. I guess there must be a ton of graphics, sounds, and cut scenes in this download. After waiting so long to get the program, it had damn well better be good.

There are some advantages coming late to the scene. Maybe I could buy a high level character on of my friends is getting rid of. I could also join up with a guild that some friends may be in. Or I could just start like a newbie. That might be more fun. Let's see how this goes.
7DRL entry Monster Supremecy has a bit of a role reversal. You are a monster who wants to see the light of day. You got to fight the other monsters, and climb up out of the dungeon.

I found the game a bit hard. The second or third monster I fight usually kills me. I try to arrange the battles so that I fight one monster at a time. My HP just go down to zero.
Is there any potion I can drink to replenish my health? How come my health just doesn't regenerate? Aside from that, the game was okay. Monster bitmap graphics were okay. Dungeon looked good.Legend of Angbandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18049943271218398553noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12003737521893278.post-7733696498390565192015-04-09T01:47:00.000-04:002015-04-09T01:47:00.439-04:00Playing the Seven Day Band

Okay. Initially I played the Seven Day Band thinking it had something to do with a rock band. Nope. It had a lot to do with Angband. LOL.

This game is very Roguelike, with a unique twist that you answer questions to help customize the game. Most of the questions seem to be about enemies. The choices you make get stored in a text file. Then the game uses that data to control behavior.

One other thing that seemed unique was that when monsters were killed and dropped gold, a yellow rectangle would fall down the screen and land at the bottom. Hmmm. I wonder if that is anything more than a gold count down there?Legend of Angbandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18049943271218398553noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12003737521893278.post-70781693377352023352015-04-08T01:36:00.000-04:002015-04-08T01:36:00.217-04:00Getting Booty

I played Booty Seekers. At first I did not know what to expect with that title. Turns out it is the pirate sort of booty. Graphics were really good in this one.

Initially I got raided by ninjas. I had a choice to fight or flee. I fought. Wrong choice. They robbed me. Luckily I hunted down another ship and got my revenge.

How do people make great games like this in only seven days? I want to know so I can do the same. This one may not be entirely Roguelike, but it is turn based, and has a hex grid. Good times I tell you.Legend of Angbandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18049943271218398553noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12003737521893278.post-82236913956438948712015-04-06T01:27:00.000-04:002015-04-06T01:27:00.424-04:00Lost Patience With Infinite Energy

I tried out 7DRL entry Infinite Energy. It seems like a cross between billiards and Tron. I was able to control a ball. Another ball heads towards me shooting some sort of laser. I assume I need to get to the spiral.

I muscle my way past the enemy. Could not figure out how to kill the enemy. However I die every time I get to the spiral. WTF? At least the thing is turn based. It is not a video game. It also does not feel very Roguelike.

The game itself looks okay. The physics behind the balls feels right. I just got tired of getting killed in the game.Legend of Angbandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18049943271218398553noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12003737521893278.post-34022458475635669802015-04-05T01:12:00.000-04:002015-04-05T01:12:00.165-04:00HUGE is Polished

I downloaded and played the 7DRL "Huge" today. It requires the Unity web player. I knew I was in for a treat when the splash screen had some neat fire effects.

The pixel graphics are good. There is some tight smoke effects on the screen. You get a HP bar on top of the screen when you fight enemies. The balance in this game seems good.

Not sure what my goal in this game is. But the thing feels really polished. People seem to be able to knock out better and better games in the 7DRL.Legend of Angbandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18049943271218398553noreply@blogger.com0
